Abstract:A Multimedia based Highway Information System (MMHIS) is described in the paper to improve the existing photologging system for various operation and management needs. The full digital, computer based MMHIS uses technologies of video, multimedia data synchronization, three-dimensional visualization, high-speed networking, and video server. This paper presents the development for the three-dimensional (3-D) terrain visualization user-interface of MMHIS, based on the Application Programming Interface (API) of OpenGL. Digital Elevation Models (DEM) from the US Geological Survey (USGS) were used to construct the 3-D terrain surface of the entire state. A unique picking algorithm was devised to conduct visual queries on the terrain surface of the state. The 3-D user-interface allows the user to zoom, rotate, and pan around the statewide terrain surface for multimedia data query. Based on this visualization technology, a number of transportation related tasks can be conducted visually and interactively at real-time for transportation planning, engineering design, public hearing, and highway management.
