Abstract:This synthesis report summarizes noteworthy practices and lessons learned from pertinent local road safety meetings and reports. Material is drawn from the Local Roads Safety Peer Exchanges held by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 2012 and 2013, follow-up virtual peer exchanges conducted in 2014 and 2015, and two reports prepared from 2010 to 2013. The reports include "Assessment of Local Road Safety, Funding, Training, and Technical Assistance" and "Noteworthy Practices: Addressing Safety on Locally Owned and Maintained Roads—A Domestic Scan." To better understand the strategies States use to advance local road safety, this report synthesizes the information from these sources in a single document. The target audiences for this report include State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), county and city planners, engineers, and public works officials.
