This document presents a set of procedures for planning and implementing safe school bus routing and scheduling, based on interviews with responsible school officials and traffic engineers and a review and synthesis of procedures used throughout the United States. School officials, traffic engineers, parents, police, and children share the responsibility for providing safe, efficient, and economical school transportation. Consequently, this guidebook is designed to demonstrate the roles and inputs of those persons involved in the process of providing safe school transportation programs.
