Abstract:IN 1998, Dallas Areas Rapid Transit (DART), a public transit agency in Dallas, Texas, began operating a large fleet of heavy-duty buses powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). As part of a $16 million commitment to alternative fuels, DART operates 139 LNG buses serviced by two new LNG fueling stations. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored a research project to collect and analyze data on the performance and operation costs of 15 of DART's LNG buses in revenue service, compared with the performance of 5 diesel buses operating on comparable routes. This paper presents the study and its results, including lessons learned, obstacles overcome, and the future of LNG operations at DART.
