Abstract:The effect of aircraft emissions on the climate of Earth is one of the most serious long-term environmental issues facing the aviation industry (IPCC, 1999; Aviation and the Environment – Report to the United States Congress, 2004). Aviation emissions, including gases and particles in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, have both direct and indirect climate effects. The direct effect is principally the emission of carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas. The indirect effects include the changes in ozone due to emissions in nitrogen oxides, the effects of aerosol emissions and water vapor on clouds, and the effects associated with contrails and contrail-induced cirrus clouds.
