Abstract:The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) established an Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) as a major component of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) program. The intent of the IVI is to improve significantly the safety and efficiency of motor vehicle operations by reducing the probability of motor vehicle crashes. These safety improvements could also show secondary benefits such as increased transportation mobility, productivity, or other operational improvements. The USDOT selected a Battelle-led team to perform an independent evaluation of the technologies being tested by Volvo and U.S. Xpress. The primary evaluation goal of the FOT is to determine the potential safety benefits of advanced Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems (IVSS). This report presents findings from an analysis of the data collected through driver surveys conducted at both the beginning and the end of the evaluation period. The first survey (Phase I) focused on driver expectations for the new safety technologies installed on selected Volvo trucks and the second survey (Phase II) focused on driver experiences using the technologies.
