Abstract:The report includes details of attempts to develop an inexpensive, disposable device for breath-alcohol screening tests which would be legally acceptable. It was found infeasible to develop such a device based on length-of-stain alcohol indicators. Silica gel and various other reagent carriers proved inadequate as nonreactive, nonchanneling indicator substrates. Acid potassium dichromate solution and other alcohol reagents proved insufficiently sensitive or stable for the purpose, or did not yield adequately sharp and intensive color changes. An innovative system was developed for generation of alcohol vapors with high accuracy and precision.
