Abstract:California has an extensive network of approximately 30,000 miles of major roads that provide access and mobility throughout the state. The condition of the system is deteriorating and California drivers are paying a high price to drive on the state's roads. This study reports the following findings: 1. California ranks third in the country in percentage of major roads in need of repair or improvement. 2. California ranks fourth nationally in extra vehicle operating costs incurred from driving on roads in need of repair. 3. Vehicle miles of travel in California continue to increase in response to population growth and economic expansion.
