Abstract:In general, low-volume, flexible pavement roadways typically consist of some combination of a natural soil subgrade, granular base course, and asphalt concrete surface. Weak subgrade soils commonly pose a problem for the transportation engineering community since the subgrade serves as a foundation to the pavement structure. Conventionally, poor quality materials are excavated and replaced or alternative soil stabilization techniques are used. However, these methods can be labor and cost intensive especially if adequate replacement material is not available in the area. Geotextiles and geogrids offer alternative solutions to these conventional solutions.
