Abstract:This report presents the findings of an experimental research program addressing the flexural behavior of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) railroad crossties and their mechanical properties. The objectives of this report were to: (1) Understand and assess the flexural behavior of HDPE crossties; (2) Evaluate the performance of the crossties with the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) manual, past applications, and the available literature; (3) Construct a calibrated material model for use in finite element analysis; and (4) Develop an accurate finite element modeling technique, which accurately portrays the behavior of the crossties using the calibrated material model. In order to investigate the flexural behavior of HDPE composite crossties, two tests from the AREMA manual were conducted; the center bending test and rail seat bending.
