Abstract:Recruiting, retaining and motivating good drivers has been of concern in the trucking industry in the past, and chances are that it will continue to be of concern. This study was designed to provide information based insights about ways in which these concerns can be addressed fruitfully and realistically, and about avenues for ameliorating driver turnover problems. The study is a comprehensive examination of human resource practices used by motor carriers to recruit, hire, and motivate drivers. Differences among motor carriers in the areas of recruiting, staffing, training, and compensation are examined. The effects of these practices on a variety of outcomes (e.g., turnover, driver performance, organizational performance, safety) are addressed, and the study tries to identify the driver-related practices that relate to success in the trucking industry. Tentative conclusions about what practices work best in the industry are drawn.
