This is a Technical Report of an FY2014 NDOT funded project on Innovative CO2 Laserbased Pavement Striping and Stripe Removal. The project was concerned with adopting the laser technology for pavement stripe and markers removal and inferring on its economic, environmental and operational characteristics. The report contains a comparison of conventional methods with the new laser ablation technology based on the operation of the laboratory-scale prototype. It is also demonstrated that although the cost of a full-scale operational system would be higher than that of currently used systems, the advantages such as absence of ghost lines, fewer equipment breakdown delays, environmentally friendly operation and practically no pavement damage make the laser technology a promising alternative to the current practice.
