Abstract:Local and state transportation agencies are redesigning roads to accommodate multimodal travel, including the addition of new configurations, infrastructures, and rules that may be unfamiliar to current drivers and other road users. Education and outreach to prepare drivers for these significant changes to roadways is an important tool by which transportation planners and operators can make new multimodal facilities more functional and effective. While general agreement on the value of education in these situations exists among practitioners, there is little systematic or comprehensive information about the best practices for driver education integrated into planning and design of new multimodal facilities. This report, drawing on prior research, media products, and extended interviews with practitioners in the field, supplies recommendations for implementing successful education programs alongside new multimodal facility projects.
