Abstract:This report reviews and highlights key content and outcomes identified at the Mid-South Megaregion Workshop held on December 8, 2016 in Memphis Tennessee. Sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Office of Planning, Environment, & Realty (HEP), the event examined shared regional issues of concern among transportation decision makers and stakeholders in the Mid-South Megaregion. The Mid-South Megaregion comprises critical highway infrastructure, passenger and freight rail, and seaports that go beyond state and agency boundaries to support the national economy. Effective transportation infrastructure, which links together neighborhoods, towns, cities to regions, and regions to megaregions is essential to strong economic growth in a global economy. Similar to other workshops conducted by FHWA, this event joined together transportation officials from across the Mid-South Megaregion to identify how states and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) can better communicate, coordinate statewide freight and rail plan development, and identify common approaches to address traffic congestion and aging infrastructure at a megaregion level.
