Abstract:Construction inspectors are an important asset to the success of a Department of Transportation; they provide quality control for state- and federally funded transportation infrastructure projects. A majority of departments of transportation in the United States are experiencing an increase in the quantity and scope of transportation infrastructure projects while simultaneously experiencing a decrease in the number of experienced construction inspectors. To offset this trend, the objectives of this research are: (1) to provide recommendations for best construction inspection practices for transportation infrastructure and (2) to create a delivery system for construction inspector training and certification materials. Transportation infrastructure inspection methods are limited to highway, roadway, and bridge infrastructure of construction projects in the United States. Selection metrics were used to evaluate findings of a review of various departments of transportation. Self-paced and web-based training and certification modules were created based on the standards and specifications of the Georgia Department of Transportation. Recommendations for best practices for transportation infrastructure inspection are presented, along with a unique and cost-effective training and certification method for construction inspectors.
