This report describes GE Global Research’s research, in partnership with GE Transportation, into developing and deploying algorithms for a locomotive-based inductive sensing system that has a very high probability of detecting broken rails with very few false-positives. These algorithms are described in detail in this report and their performance has been characterized by performing extensive field-testing on the data collected from a previously developed Rail Integrity Alert System (RIAS).
