Abstract:

This special issue deals not only with integrated electronic systems but with the technology that is required to achieve successful operation. To place some of the 1969 dimensions of the highway system in the United States in proper focus, we note the following figures: ; 3.7 million miles of roads and streets, almost 10.5 million registered motor vehicles, ; 1 trillion 60 billion vehicle miles of travel in a year, 56 000 highway fatalities in a year, and 14 million vehicle crashes in a year.
