Abstract:The Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) program consists of a range of advanced technologies and concepts which, in combination, can improve mobility and transportation productivity, enhance safety, maximize the use of existing transportation facilities, conserve energy resources, and reduce adverse environmental effects. The national IVHS program includes a range of initiatives in the areas of research and development (R&D), system architecture development, operational tests, institutional/policy projects, and deployment projects. The objective of this report is two-fold: (1) to describe those IVHS projects funded by the Department of Transportation (DOT) modal administrations including the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Federal Transit Administration (PTA), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and, (2) to provide those interested in the IVHS program with a progress status using the milestones from the Department of Transportation’s IVHS Strategic Plan (December 1992).
