Alternative Title:
3D methodology for evaluating rail crossing roughness : technical summary : final report.
Description of Research Project The overall objective of this project is to investigate develop a quantitative method or measure for determining the need to rehabilitate rail crossings. The scope of the project includes investigation of sensor capabilities, development of a measurement methodology and test of technology. The project is seen as a first step towards automating the crossing inspection process, ultimately leading to the quantification and estimation of future performance of rail crossings. No quantitative method currently exists to quickly and economically assess the condition of rail crossings and trigger highway maintenance activities for improvement or preservation of these crossings. The goal of the proposed project is to test and develop a low-cost sensor for evaluating and quantifying rail crossing roughness. Specific objectives include: (1) development of a geometry based method for quantifying rail crossing roughness; (2) development and test of sensor platform based on the Microsoft Kinect; and (2012/05/013) test and validation of method and platform to include maintenance threshold for test vehicle at various design speeds for various crossings under good, fair and poor roughness conditions.
