Abstract:This study investigates the mechanical responses of rail pad assemblies within the concrete crosstie fastening system, focusing on the lateral relative displacement between this component and the concrete crosstie rail seat and rail base. Initially, a Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) was conducted to define, identify, and evaluate failures causes and effects related to rail pads. This study can serve to guide the process of answering questions related to the component behavior and set the groundwork for future phases of research. Laboratory and field experiments were carried out at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado, where multiple realistic loading regimes were imposed to the fastening system to gain understanding of the mechanics of rail pad assemblies.
