Abstract:This is an executive summary of a strategic plan for deploying Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology in the Des Moines metropolitan area. The plan was developed as part of the Des Moines ITS Early Deployment Study (EDS). ITS is the use of computers, electronic communications, electronic data gathering devices (e.g., traffic detectors), and electronic information distribution mechanisms (e.g., roadside variable message signs, the Internet, cable TV, etc.) to increase the reliability, productivity, and safety of transporting people and goods. Conventional transportation improvements generally involve a physical change to the transportation infrastructure or to transportation vehicles (e.g, adding a new highway lane or modifying transit vehicles). The primary focus of ITS improvements is to facilitate the safer and more efficient use of existing or planned transportation facilities and services using information technology.
