Abstract:This report summarizes the New Hampshire Department of Transportation’s (NHDOT) investigation of
the performance of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) when used in drilled shaft applications. SCC and
conventional concrete (CC) piles were evaluated side-by-side for infilling properties, air content, and
segregation. The investigation was undertaken because the method of construction on this highway
project exposed several feet of the shafts after they were poured affording a unique opportunity to
observe the infilling properties of the two mixes. The NHDOT concluded that for the mixes used, there
was no significant difference in performance.
