Abstract:In 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake destroyed 1.25 miles of the double-deck Cypress Freeway in Oakland, California. In realigning and rebuilding the freeway, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) undertook to identify any important archeological remains. Caltrans worked with Sonoma State University to study 48 city blocks slated for construction. More than 2500 archeological features containing nearly 500,000 artifacts were uncovered. The report describes some of the findings and the historical context.
