Abstract:

In this project, we developed an integrated database to provide new analysis capabilities

for discovering correlations between roadway characteristics and the occurrence of

fatality collisions. Specifically, the aim of this data analysis project was to support the

determination of relationships between Oklahoma roadway inventory data and NHTSA

Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data. An approach had to be developed to

match location data from the two different coordinate mapping systems used in these

databases. The understanding of relationships between roadway characteristics and

fatal crashes will support highway planning decisions and improve utilization of

available resources targeting roadway safety. Initial blackspot and systematic analyses

were performed as well as analyses utilizing additional data sources.
