Abstract:The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) sponsored and hosted the
2012 National State Safety Engineers and Traffic Engineers Peer-to-Peer Workshop on November 14 and 15, 2012, at the
Hyatt Regency Woodfield hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois. The peer-exchange workshop was attended by representatives of
highway safety engineers and traffic engineers from 33 states, and the discussion focus was the implementation of a variety
of safety engineering and traffic operations countermeasures and initiatives, in addition to complying with new federal rules.
The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including the history of mobility and safety; the national scene and perspective;
linking safety engineering and traffic engineering efforts; organizational structures of state agencies and the interrelationships
between traffic and safety engineering procedures; managing performance (operations and safety), and systematic safety and
operations. This report summarizes the attendee statistics, the conference program, the main activities (including 17 presentation
and discussion sessions), and feedback provided on attendee surveys.
