Abstract:This is the fifth and final report provided to fulfill the statutory requirement to periodically summarize the progress of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). In the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), Congress authorized the strategies needed to continue the momentum in the public and private sectors toward the successful deployment of ITS. Based on these strategies, the 1997 Report to Congress presents the future direction of the program, discusses the remaining challenges, and offers an update on program activities.
