Abstract:During the early nineteenth century the United States experienced a period of growth and expansion. To help meet needs occasioned by this growth, improved means of communication and transportation were established. Among these improvements were the construction of turnpikes. The period from 1800-1830 has, in fact, been termed by George Rogers Taylor as the "Turnpike Era". During this time, the state of Virginia was involved in the construction of many turnpikes. Among them was a road connecting Staunton and Scottsville, known as the Staunton and James River Turnpike. This report focuses on the history of this road and traces its life, mainly through the use of documents relating to it. Included is a brief discussion of the reasons for its construction and the factors that led to its eventual failure. A description of the route in terms of modern roads and landmarks also is included. This section indicates the problems encountered during the construction and operation of the turnpike, and delineates the portions of the original route that are being used today. Although this report is concerned with the history of a specific turnpike, in a general way, it reflects the formation and operation of Virginia turnpikes in the early nineteenth century.
