Abstract:Cost-effective transportation management can improve mobility. Mobility and how to maintain it becomes particularly critical when you consider that traffic on our roads is estimated to increase nearly 50 percent by the year 2000. Our road supply will only increase by about six percent by the year 2000. The objective of transportation management is to apply cost-effective measures to address the supply/demand problems. The case studies presented in this report illustrate how specific problems were addressed through better management or use of the services, modes, and facilities available. Thus, transportation management attains its goal of mobility through capacity improvements (supply) and demand-reduced actions.
