Abstract:Continuity diaphragms used on skewed bents in prestressed girder bridges cause difficulties in detailing and ; construction. Details for bridges with large diaphragm skew angles (>30°) have not been a problem for LA DOTD. ; However, as the skew angle decreases or when the girder spacing decreases, the connection and the construction become ; more difficult. Even the effectiveness of the diaphragms is questionable at these high skews. Thus, the need for ; continuity diaphragms for skewed continuous span precast prestressed concrete girder bridges is investigated. The ; bridge parameters considered in this study are based on results of a survey sent to other states’ bridge engineers and ; design of experiment techniques. The parameters include girder type, bridge skew angle, girder spacing, span length, ; and diaphragm skew angle. The effects of continuity diaphragms on stresses and deflections from truck and lane ; loading on continuous skewed bridges are evaluated and results provide a fundamental understanding of the load ; transfer mechanism in diaphragms of skewed bridges. The effectiveness of continuity diaphragms for skewed ; continuous bridges is limited. The outcome of the research will reduce the construction and maintenance costs of ; bridges in the state of Louisiana and the nation.
