Abstract:The Aviation Topics Speech Acts Taxonomy (ATSAT) is a tool for categorizing pilot/controller communications according to their purpose and for classifying communication errors. Air traffic controller communications that deviate from FAA Air Traffic Control Order 7110.65, and pilot communications that depart from the suggested communication in the Airman's Information Manual can be identified and labeled using the error codes provided in the ATSAT. By using the same procedures and tool to analyze communications, direct comparisons can be made between controller phraseology usage in the field and during simulation.
Results of a preliminary study to measure inter-coder agreement revealed that novice coders were more dependent on the surface characteristics of the verbatim transcripts and experts relied more on domain specific background knowledge and experience with ATC phraseology to code ATC communications. If a researcher elects to use the ATSAT, we recommend that all coders receive the same orientation and instruction sessions prior to using the it.
