Abstract:The study determined the most effective sign message for informing commuters of the ridesharing services available to them. An inventory of the signs in Virginia revealed that eight different messages were being used to promote ridesharing, the most common being the 3-line variety containing CARPOOL on the first line, INFO on the second, and a telephone number on the third. The use of an alphanumeric or easy-to-remember telephone number was found to be common nationwide. Highway signs were deemed by the persons surveyed in the study as being one of the best means of promoting ridesharing services.
