Abstract:Highway embankments constitute some of the most common geotechnical facilities being constructed by highway and transportation agencies. The design, construction, and field performance of these embankments are great importance to federal and state transportation costs and public safety. When the embankments are not properly designed and/or constructed, serious problems such as slope instability and excessive settlement can arise. Very conservatively designed embankments can lead to significant budgetary waste for the highway agencies.
