Abstract:Hydrogen-powered fuel is an emerging technology that provides an alternative source of fuel to fossil fuel. Commercially viable technologies are emerging that are expected to allow for consumer vehicles powered by hydrogen as part of a growing hydrogeneconomy. These vehicles and their supporting infrastructure, such as pipelines and filling stations, will be constructed using innovative materials and manufacturing techniques to improve system efficiency and enable the economic growth. It is critical that these new technologies are fully understood prior to widespread application. One key technical challenge is the maintenance and assessment of systems under service conditions to ensure public safety. It is critical that possible failure methods be thoroughly investigated and understood, such that preventative maintenance and procedures can be implemented effectively. Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) technologies have an important role to play in evaluating the condition of materials in-situ. This report identifies engineering materials that can be expected to play a key role in the infrastructure and vehicles in the cominghydrogen economy. The report focuses on materials to be used in composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) that will be used to store hydrogen fuel. These materials will also be used in other infrastructure such as pipelines and filling stations. The goal of the report is to develop key information on materials to be used in a hydrogen economy such that NDE technologies can be developed. The report also identifies and documents the materials failure modes to develop an understanding of what NDT&E methods must be employed in their inspection to ensure public safety. /Abstract from report summary page/
