Abstract:While the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixes is common practice within many state departments of transportation, the evolution of the Superpave system has prompted a need for specific Superpave guidelines for the use of RAP. In this study, rheological properties were measured for different combinations and percentages of aged asphalts and virgin asphalts. The result of this study is a methodology for determining the effect of RAP on rheological properties of PG binders in the Superpave system. It is important to remember that other factors, including mixture properties, aggregate requirements, RAP handling and homogeneity, and project economics, also need to be considered in determining the final amount of RAP to be used in asphalt mixes.
