Abstract:Choosing the right path for a sustainable transportation policy is a daunting responsibility. One answer to these challenges has received significant federal and local investment since 1991: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), information technology that can be used by transportation managers to automate and monitor transportation and inform travelers about their options. This booklet highlights communities that have chosen new paths through ITS. Five central objectives for sustainable transportation discussed are: options and access for citizens; better tools for moving people; fair pricing for transportation; moving goods; and, shaping the city. Success stories included offer recent examples of communities that have put intelligent transportation systems to the test by delivering more efficient, accessible and sustainable services. (84 p.)
