Abstract:Telecommuting encompasses a variety of non-traditional work arrangements that move work to people, rather than people to work. Recent interest in telecommuting on the part of businesses, public agencies, employees, and policy makers has been generated by a desire to increase productivity, reduce costs, balance family and work responsibilities, and address traffic congestion and environmental issues. In 1996, the U.S. Congress directed the Department of Transportation (DOT) to identify successful telecommuting programs in the public and private sectors and with disseminating information on these programs and the benefits and costs of telecommuting. The Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) conducted the research on telecommuting to address this request. The findings from this research are provided in this report. (63 p.)
