Abstract:This report summarizes an initial stage investigation into wearable sensors for transportation research
applications. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has observed significant activity in this area and
seeks to obtain an understanding of the breadth of uses that researchers and practitioners envision for this
technology, both now and in the future. Staff from the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center
prepared this report on behalf of FHWA’s Exploratory Advanced Research Program. The authors of this report
discuss research into air quality, physiological, and activity sensors, which have specific transportation
applications and are fairly well-developed. The authors include a summary of observations made by the project
team regarding the use of wearable sensors for public sector transportation research.
