Abstract:Current inspection of rail for internal defects is carried out by ultrasonic and/or magnetic techniques. This report covers work directed toward advancing present-day magnetic technique for inspecting rail for internal flaws. The major emphasis was placed on improving the speed and detectability of current techniques. Experimental work was performed directed toward determining where and how improvements can be made with existing equipment and techniques. The three major areas investigated for improvement were 1) magnetization 2) flaw sensors, and 3) signal processing. A series of full-scale dynamic experiments were conducted with several magnetic configurations on a test track containing a high concentration and variety of actual rail defects. Certain magnetic flaw detection techniques were demonstrated for several types of rail defects and identification/characterization methods were modeled for a hypothetical system.
