A program is underway to develop and demonstrate transportation systems based on vehicles which are capable of automatic operation on special guideways and manual operation on conventional roads. Adequate and reliable communications to and from vehicles is essential to dual mode's success. The report treats this important aspect of communications. In the chapter on communications systems for dual mode transportation, the dual mode concept, on-guideway communications, off-guideway communications and FCC regulations are discussed. In terms of candidate communications systems communication through electromagnetic fields and closed-circuit communication through mechanical contact are covered. Conclusions are presented. References are furnished.
