Abstract:This report presents the results of a research program conducted jointly by the United States Department of Transportation and the Federal Republic of Germany Ministry for Research and Technology. The object of this program was to study the dynamics of a maglev vehicle traversing a flexible guideway. Work in the U.S. was carried out at MITRE/Metrek in McLean, Virginia; work in the FRG was carried out at Transrapid-EMS in Munich. Two types of experiments were conducted using the full-scale KOMET test track in Manching, Germany. In the first, sinusoidal guideway deviations were deliberately introduced, and the KOMET vehicle was run over these at various speeds up to 324 KM/HR. The second type of test involved removing pier supports from the test track in order to make it more flexible. Theoretical predictions of the dynamic motions from a MITRE computer program are compared to the experimental results.
