Abstract:A laboratory study was made of transformer and thyristor voltage control for speed control of a rotary induction motor. The test program consisted of two parts; the first dealing with measurements of the induction motor characteristics and the second with the distribution of complex electric power in the system with both types of voltage-control. The current harmonics which are generated by thyristor control are shown to give rise to additional motor losses and reduction in motor efficiency. The non-sinusoidal currents present with thyristor control produce reactive distortion power. Suggestions are made regarding the suitable instrumentation to use in measuring the distortion power as well as the other components of complex power in the system.
