Now, there is no certified conversion process of food waste for SAF by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). We report the use of zeolite-supported molybdenum carbide nanocatalysts in upgrading biocrudes, produced from food wastes through HTL, into SAF precursors. Our data show a complete removal of oxygen from the biocrude through hydrodeoxygenation and a higher heating value of 46.5 MJ/kg, which is comparable to that of Jet A (46.1 MJ/kg). The prescreening tests (tier alpha and beta) show the average carbon number of the distillation cut (150° to 230°C) of upgraded fuel is 10.6, close to the value of 11.4 for average conventional jet fuel, and the specifications of properties including surface tension, viscosity, heating value, flash point, and freezing point were found to meet the standards of SAF. The metal carbide nanocatalysts were reusable in upgrading tests, and the activity of deoxygenation was retained. However, Raoult’s Law is not accurate at low mole fractions, which is typical for complex mixtures such as fuels. A common approach to correcting Raoult’s Law is to apply a scale factor, a so-called activity coefficient. Numerous models exist for predicting activity coefficients. Here we benchmark against the UNIFAC model, which predicts activity coefficients based on mole fractions, group fractions, Van derWaals volume and surface area and temperature-dependent interaction terms between groups. While this approach is truly predictive, its accuracy at very low mole fractions has not been validated, and it is computationally intensive, particularly for simulations (especially optimizations) that require vapor composition or pressure within the inner-most loop. Here we present an alternative correction to Raoult’s law, where the vapor pressure of the ith component is represented by a modified form of the Clausius–Clapeyron equation. The calibrated range for ICN was also extended to lower cetane number (CN) values (5 to 35) to allow CN quantification for jet fuel synthetic blending components (SBCs) with low CN. ICN and DCN were shown to be highly correlated for values above about 30. This study presents the most comprehensive comparison of these two methods published to date. Because of the importance of low-volume test methods for early-stage SBC production process development, we demonstrated that ICN and DCN can be accurately measured with 15 mL of fuel, well below 40 to 100 mL required by standard methods. ICN or DCN is important for jet fuels because fuels with lower CN are more prone to lean blowout (LBO), an undesirable operational failure in a jet engine. Comparing data on a fuel-to-air ratio (Φ) at LBO for the NJFCP fuels shows similar linear correlations for ICN and DCN. Ignition delay measurements at lower-pressure and higher-temperature conditions may be more directly relevant to LBO. At 675 °C, 0.5 MPa, and a global Φ of roughly 0.68, ignition delay time correlations to LBO were similar to those produced from DCN and ICN. A much weaker correlation was obtained with a global Φ value of 0.34. Forty-one State departments of transportation (DOTs) provided technical feedback on safety improvements to the DCMF Program and implemented new safety improvements to facilitate evaluations. These States are members of the Evaluation of Low-Cost Safety Improvements Pooled Fund Study (ELCSI-PFS), which functions under the DCMF Program. This project evaluated bicycle treatments at urban intersections. The ELCSI-PFS Technical Advisory Committee selected this evaluation as one of the priorities within its purview. Large-eddy simulations (LES) of soot formation in a realistic single-sector RQL combustor are first performed, and the local thermochemical data, along with the volumes of the zones containing the respective finite volume cells, are then used to construct a chemical reactor network (CRN) model. The CRN model, coupled with the UQ tool DAKOTA, is used to conduct forward UQ, sensitivity analysis, and inverse UQ. The forward UQ indicates variability ranging from 28 % to 89% around the mean soot prediction, depending on the location within the combustor. The local and global sensitivity analyses highlight the contributions of nucleation and condensation processes near the fuel injection zone, while growth and oxidation processes predominantly influence soot predictions in the primary zone. Since the baseline model underpredicts soot compared to experimental measurements, a Bayesian inference-based inverse UQ analysis is performed to identify sensitive input rate uncertainties that can improve the quantitative agreement with experimental soot levels. Thus, the overall strategy identifies the most influential aspects of the soot model, their relevant sensitivity to local zones within the combustor, and further refinements to the baseline rates that can provide valuable insights for future model developments. One approach to reducing their noise involves synchronizing rotor phase relationships to control radiated noise directionally. This paper presents a practical electronic phase synchronization method for multirotor aircraft, experimentally evaluates its effectiveness using a hexacopter in an anechoic chamber, and investigates how vehicle configuration influences noise control capability. Harmonic noise reductions of 10 dB are demonstrated over a 20◦ azimuthal arc, with limited increases in other directions. Noise amplification of 6 dB is also achieved over the same region. Global reductions of 6 dB across nearly all observer angles are obtained using alternative rotor phase offsets. Statistical analysis of phase controller error indicates that maintaining phase accuracy within 5◦ is necessary for 10 dB attenuation. Simulations across various rotor configurations show consistent noise control performance, with higher rotor counts enabling greater directional control of radiated noise.
