This report describes the testing, construction, and ,7 years of performance evaluations of an unbonded concrete overlay with and without tied shoulders. Unbonded concrete overlay was used successfully on a thirteen mile stretch of 1-25 north of Denver in Colorado. Visual investigation and distress survey was performed and results are summarized. In general, the unbonded overlay has performed quite well, with little distress to date. It appears that tied shoulders are doing what is expected, increasing the load carrying capacity of the driving lane by transferring the load to the shoulder.
