Abstract:Prediction of wheel displacements and wheel-rail forces is a prerequisite to the evaluation of the curving performance of rail vehicles. This information provides part of the basis for the rational design of wheels and suspension components, for establishing criteria for maintenance of track and wheels, for use as a guideline for safety standards, and for understanding the mechanism of noise generation and wheel-climbing. The analysis presented here extends the results from linear steady-curving appropriate to flangeless guidance, and provides a foundation for the examination of the details of forces and displacements under more severe conditions necessary to the understanding, prevention, and suppression of undesirable effects.
