Abstract:Methodologies used to characterize the mechanical behavior of various materials used in the construction of the crash test dummy called THOR (Test device for Human Occupant Restraint) are described. These materials include polyurethane, neoprene, and charcoal polyester foam. The methodologies are developed and applied to determine material constants from dynamic compression data obtained from tests conducted specifically for this purpose. The material constants are subsequently used in finite element analyses to predict the response of various components of THOR to impact loading.
