Abstract:This report summarizes research results from the Rollover Data Special Study (RODSS) project. The research encompassed the
design of a RODSS database for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, review of the RODSS data to evaluate the
quality of the data collected and whether they can support crash safety evaluations, and analysis of detailed rollover crash data
records to assess the effectiveness of recent safety features in light vehicles (e.g., passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, minivans,
vans, and light pickup trucks) in minimizing the occurrence of rollover crashes and in mitigating occupant injuries that result
from such crashes. These safety features include rollover protection that includes sensors to trigger inflatable side curtain air
bags to mitigate occupant injuries, electronic stability control to reduce loss of yaw control, and roll stability control to minimize
the number of rollover crashes.
