Abstract:The Alternating Current Potential Drop (ACPD) method is investigated as a means of making measurements in laboratory experiments on the initiation and growth of multiple site damage (MSD) cracks in a common aluminum alloy used for aircraft construction. Procedures for instrumentation MSD test specimens are recommended. The ACPD method is found to be capable of (1) detecting crack initiation at a crack length of the order of 1mm; (2) monitoring crack propagation at a resolution of the order of 5um; and (3) providing an indirect measurement of crack extension in R-curve type tests of fastener hold details.
