This guide, from the National Asphalt Pavement Association's (NAPA's) Balanced Mix Design (BMD) Implementation Group, discusses asphalt mixture quality assurance (QA) that incorporates balanced mix design. This form of asphalt quality assurance goes beyond the traditional focus on asphalt content, gradation, and volumetric properties. Applying balanced mix design to QA includes: mix design approval, mix design verification, and mixture acceptance. This paper looks at the differences in BMD and volumetric properties QA by material factors, production factors, and testing factors. A table presents considerations for incorporating BMD in asphalt mixture QA and acceptance. The table highlights where agencies may need to change their procedures, staffing, and/or specification language. A phased approach for implementing BMD in asphalt QA is recommended.
