The purpose of validation of a mathematical model is to compare the results of modeling a specific scenario with measured data obtained in the same environment. The comparison provides evidence about the capabilities and limitations of the math model. As a result of experience gained in the analysis of data from engineering flight tests performed at Midway airport in August of 1988, the microwave landing system (MLS) math modeling group has developed an approach to model validation and a philosophy of interpreting the results of a validation study. This report is a statement of this approach and philosophy.
