Explosives may be concealed on one's person upon entering the airport security checkpoint or passenger. To assist screeners' ability to find hidden explosive threats on one's person or find trace explosives from someone who has either constructed or handled an explosive device, explosive detection portal devices are currently in development. This document describes a plan for collecting critical information about the interface and usability, and the efficiency and effectiveness of three explosive trace detection portals: Ion Track Instruments, Inc., Sandia National Laboratories, and Barringer Technologies, Inc. The assessment will proceed in two phases: a usability assessment (operator and passenger), and a laboratory effectiveness and efficiency assessment for all three portals. All interface and usability assessments of the portal technologies will be conducted at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center's Aviation Security Laboratory.
